“The blood of the sphinx runs through my veins,” Sasha said as he inspected the warrior standing at attention before him. “It’s what makes my family line so potent—what gives us the power to make or break a man.” Son of Cleopatra and Julius Caesar, Sasha is the king of kings. He’s the pharaoh, and he’s supposed to be the most powerful man in Egypt, but he’s convinced there’s something wrong with him. Maybe he’s in heat or maybe he’s just cursed, but no pharaoh should have such an insatiable need to be mated by another man. Even worse, the man he desires has never shown an inkling of interest in him. When the young pharaoh finds himself the sole ruler of Egypt and under siege by the Romans, he has to find a way to deal with the desires consuming him or all will be lost.

First I want to say that I love the world building. J. Johanis does a great deal of research and you don’t read any out of context contemporary sayings in her books. You move to another time and place. When I’m reading her books, I feel transformed into another world.I am a lover of historical dark romances. I felt so close to Sasha because he has a kind heart but he can be cruel if he needs to be. He’s a young pharaoh that has a need to be topped by a man. His needs conflict with his role as a pharaoh. No one wants to top a pharaoh. The people make fun of him and he is worried when the Romans come to Egypt. Sasha is very in touch with his sexual needs, but he is young and immature for a pharaoh. He really wanted his childhood friend Adrian to top him.
The sexual scenes are hot! The interactions between Sasha and Adrian are challenging and confusing for both of them, but Adrian knows Sasha’s needs. Sasha has many choices to make to save his people from the Romans. It will be interesting to see where book 2 will take us.
There are some twists and turns that I didn’t expect so you’ll be in for a surprise. This story was well written with beautiful descriptions and fast paced. I recommend this book and all of J. Johanis’s books if you enjoy m/m paranormal erotic fiction. I sure did. No Cliffhangers.

Where do I start? The blurb for Blood of the Sphinx by J. Johanis proved intriguing. Ancient Egypt? Fantastic. Kink? Awesome. Unfortunately, the blurb did not live up to my expectations for the book. A novella which is the first in a new series, Virgin Kings, this story fails to deliver on several counts.
First, I found the historical aspect lacking. Other than the fact that it was set in ancient Egypt, right before the Roman Empire absorbed the land, there was nothing historical in the story that took me back in time. For one, Sasha, the young seventeen year old pharaoh and son of Cleopatra and Julius Caesar, acted in no way that a perceived deity should. Not only were his modes of behavior off-putting, immature and modern, but so was his speech. In addition, his love interest and personal guard Adrian’s behavior spoke of the same modernity. The modern speech patterns and behavior were prevalent in other characters in the book as well.
The failure of a strong historical aspect can be attributed to weak world-building. Since this book carries aspects of magic, I believe it is highly important to vividly depict and define the world in which we find ourselves and how it differs not only from our own, but from our preconceptions of Ancient Egypt. When a paranormal component is added, this proves even more crucial. I especially wanted to know about views held of gay relationships and mating, since this is a pivotal plot point in the book. Sasha, the young pharoah is ridiculed by commoners due to his sexual proclivities, but we never learn just what is wrong with the fact that he seeks sexual release with men. In fact, sexual male over male dominance is an arena sport in Johanis’ Egypt. Be warned, there is a fair amount of sexual assault in this book. While sexual assault is part of our world, past and present, I wasn't sure how all the assaults played into the Egypt Johanis chose to create.
I would have liked a tighter and more lucid depiction of this world in regards to its norms, values, practices, and language. Had this been accomplished, I could have willingly suspended my disbelief and immersed myself in the pages of this book. This was a good concept for a book that lacked full command in its fabrication.
I guess this wasn’t the right book for be. I had a lot of issues about it. The biggest was the main character. Sasha was just so infuriating to me. I’m a little sad about it, because I was so excited to read the book.
The plot was good, I like most of it, but I had a very hard time trying to understand Sasha and how easy his attention could go to his sexual needs instead of paying a little more attention to the enormous problems he was facing. It also bother me how quick he was to seek for replacements when things weren’t going as he wished, maybe part of his upbringing which make it understandable, but not a nice feature on a main character.
Adrian was a nicer character, I really liked him and I felt sorry for how he could be hurt because of other’s actions. The way the relationship between them was developed was something that I also liked.
The fighting and the non-con part was good, I wouldn’t mind a little more scenes among that subject but I was pleased the way it was. Even though I had some issues about the book, or more like with Sasha, I liked the writing and I’m looking forward to keep reading books from the author.
I would 100% say this is a fantasy more than anything else. By the title you get the gist of the time period but the history isn’t perfectly accurate and it’s not supposed to be. It’s the time of Antony & Cleopatra when Octavius and the Romans defeated her and her armies and stormed the cities and palace of Alexandria. You know the story so I won’t make this a history lesson. If you know how it ended for Cleopatra than you'll see where J. Johanis deviates for a good reason.
The Pharaoh in this, Sasha, is pretty dang powerful… Even if his people don’t see it. But he has “unconventional needs” and that’s where his best friend and personal guard, Adrian, comes in… at least he hopes.
I’ve read everything (I think) that J. Johanis has ever written. Her work is that of dark erotica. I’m aware this isn’t everyone’s thing but for me she does it in such a fascinating way I can’t stop reading if I tried. Not everyone achieves their goal in books like these but she did in this one.
I’m thrilled to see it’s the start of a series and I’m eager for more. Even though it’s a novella it packs a punch and has a lot of story in this. Put aside your knowledge of history (to a certain degree) and see the fantasy and erotic passion of this tale by J. Johanis.
This, like all her books, is very entertaining and page turning.
